Abstract

Properties and functions of macrophages have been extensively studied in animals, but little work has been done in humans because of the difficulties in obtaining a homogeneous and adequate mononuclear phagocyte population. Nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) has been largely used with polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) to study the functions of phagocytes (12,16,21). This method can reveal some congenital defects of PMNL such as in chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) where intracellular killing of microorganisms is impaired (22).
