Abstract

Attempts to isolate thermophilic nitrifiers from two central Australian desert soils and two hot-house soils were unsuccessful. A suspected nitrifier isolated from garden compost was identified as B. stearothermophilus, and was later shown to have no nitrifying ability, but produced nitrite by the reduction of nitrate present in the compost.
