Abstract

METHODS: We designed a non-human primate renal ischemiareperfusion model to test the effects of nitrite in preserving renal function. Adult cynomologous monkeys were subjected to 30 minutes of bilateral warm renal ischemia with or without 1.8 umol/kg of sodium nitrite prior to renal cross-clamp. Weight-matched control animals received saline infusion. Insignificant hypotension developed in some animals during nitrite infusion. Nitrite levels were measured at baseline, after loading dose and 5 and 30 minutes after reperfusion. A baseline renal biopsy was taken and two subsequent biopsies were taken 30 minutes and 7 days after reperfusion. Daily BUN/creatinine measurements were made for 7 days. Animals were euthanized on day 7.
