Abstract

Abstract Nitrate production by the surface centimetre of stream sediments was investigated in a wide range of sediment types from five areas in southern Ontario. Nitrification rates were estimated in laboratory incubations and ranged from 0 to 180 mg m −2 d −1 . The highest rates were associated with fine textured and organic samples. Nitrate production rate showed a significant correlation with sediment clay content ( r = 0. 77). Many other sediment properties exhibited weaker significant correlations with nitrate production.
