Abstract

AbstractHypervalent iodine compounds are known for their extensive use as potential oxidants in organic synthesis. In spite of the similar reactivity with transition metals, hypervalent iodine reagents are more preferred because of their environmental sustainability. Among several types of hypervalent iodine reagents, trivalent organoiodine(III) reagents are highly popular due to their easy accessibility, stability and controlled oxidizing reactivity. Also, iodine(III) reagents are commercially available and inexpensive. Amines and amides react with iodine(III) oxidants in some specific way to provide a divalent electrophilic ionic species known as a nitrenium ion. Depending on the nature and stability of the nitrenium ion, numerous oxidative transformations to generate valuable functional molecules have been reported. This review encompasses discussions about hypervalent organo iodine(III)‐enabled organic transformations with the involvement of a nitrenium ion as an intermediate.magnified image
