Abstract
A simple, mild and region-selective method for the nitration of aromatic compounds using sodium nitrate/ sodium nitrite/ dilute nitric acid (6 wt.%) in the presence of bronsted acid-surfactant-catalyst (BASC) in water at room temperature was explored. An exclusive ortho-selectivity was observed with excellent yields in case of phenolic compounds. Here dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) performs dual role as catalyst and surfactant. This catalyst possesses some characteristic features like nonvolatility, imflamibility, low cost, good performance and is easily biodegradable. Mild reaction conditions and good to excellent yields of the products are the noteworthy advantages of this method.
