Abstract

AbstractNitrate adsorption by subsoils of Andepts, Oxisols, and Alfisols from Mexico and South America was studied using a batch‐type technique. Nitrate adsorption increased as the acidity of the suspension increased to about pH 3.5. This increase was directly proportional, but not equivalent, to the amount of hydrogen ion added. The adsorption of NO3‐ was concentration‐dependent and was described by a Langmuir type isotherm when NO3‐ concentration was above 0.03N for Andepts and above 0.08N for Oxisols and Alfisols. Adsorption maxima and affinity constants of Andepts were twice as large as those of other soils. A significant correlation was observed between the amount of NO3‐ adsorbed and the content of amorphous inorganic materials extractable with 0.5N NaOH.
