Abstract

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated aresearch-based prevention program in agricultural safety and health in 1990, and partof that program focuses on hazards associated with tractors. The program incorporatesboth intramural and extramural components and includes three principal elements:surveillance, research, and intervention. This program has improved thecharacterization of tractor-related hazards, increased knowledge about using roll-overprotective structures (ROPS), and disseminated information as a strategy to preventtractor-related injuries. NIOSH has identified machine-related injuries as a priorityarea, which includes preventing tractor-related injuries. In addition, the Department ofHealth and Human Services, of which NIOSH is a part, is considering a nationalobjective to promote the installation of a ROPS on every tractor used in agriculturalproduction.
