Abstract

Abstract This paper deals with one of several methods which were used to investigate the existence, nature and factors influencing a child's (9-14 years) conception of a computer system. Drawings by subjects as a method of data collection is introduced and discussed. Three empirical studies are described which examine the child's model in terms of its components, conduits and causal effect. The factors of age and experience are highlighted as is the discovery that task orientation led to the implication that no single mental model exists.
