Abstract

1. Cermets based on synthetic potassium fluorophlogopite and nickel, covering a wide range of component concentration, were prepared and investigated. The character of the variation of specimen porosity and volume during sintering was determined, the structure of the cermets was examined metallographically, and their physicomechanical properties were studied. 2. A process was developed for the electroless deposition of nickel on the surface of mica glass. 3. A comparative study of the above-mentioned properties was made for nickel-mica cermets prepared with plain and nickel-plated mica glass. It was established that the effect of nickel plating on the sintering of the cermets varies depending on the ratio of the mica and nickel contents. At nickel contents of more than 50 vol.%, nickel plating improves the adhesion of the mica to the metal and increases the strength properties of the cermets by a factor of 1.5–1.7; at nickel contents of 30–50 vol.%, nickel plating has an adverse effect upon the strength of the cermets.
