Abstract

The pig-tailed macaque (Macaca leonina) is sympatric with rhesus macaques (M. mulatta) in various areas of Bangladesh. The overall group size of M.n.leonina varies from 13 to 26 while the group size of M. mulatta varies from 24 to 78. M.mulatta spends 62.8% of their active time on the ground, while M.leonina spends only 1% time on the ground and 87.5% in the middle canopy. A total of 101 plant species are used for food by these two macaque species, of which 42.6% were shared. Low population density, different food preferences, preference of terrestrial and arboreal feeding and use of different patterns of forest strata allows M.leonina and M.mulatta to share resources in the same area without major conflict.
