Abstract

ABSTRACTIn situ Cu-Ni3Ti composites with near-eutectic compositions of Cu96Ni3Ti1 and Cu92Ni6Ti2 were prepared by casting. Microstructure analysis showed that multi-scale Ni3Ti particles are present in the alloys. Thin wires with about 98.8% areal reduction were acquired by cold drawing the alloys. Tension tests of the wires revealed that the Cu92Ni6Ti2 alloy exhibited superior mechanical properties, which we attribute to the presence of the multi-scale Ni3Ti particles. Annealing strengthening was also found in the Cu92Ni6Ti2 alloy wires. Annealing twins, which prevent the alloys from recrystallisation softening, were found in samples annealed at 550°C. Both alloys have high electrical conductivity.
