Abstract

The NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA) maintains a database of legal claims involving NHS organizations in England. Over the years this has built up into a substantial resource of information about contemporary clinical negligence litigation, and in 2008 the NHSLA decided to analyse selected claims so that lessons can be learnt. Clinical practitioners will be familiar with the routine collection of maternity data, and the analysis of near misses and poor outcomes. The intention is always to see what lessons can be learned so that repetition of poor outcomes is made less likely.
