Abstract

Almost 20% of adult mental healthcare budgets are spent on secure services. Although critical, such services cannot be exempt from contributing to the £20 billion efficiency savings the NHS needs to make before 2014. At Alpha Hospitals, we work in partnership with the NHS to offer mental healthcare in low and medium secure settings to meet the needs of local communities. Specialist care can be expensive, and that is why we take the government’s call for improved efficiency, effectiveness and quality through evidence-based care in mental health very seriously. We often treat the most difficult patients who can tie-up the most resources across AE this is the way healthcare should be run all of the time. I believe there are three ingredients that can make a big difference to enabling change in the NHS. External partners, empowered teams and the right structures are fundamental components to enable radical change to take place.
