Abstract

The function of glycosphingolipids on cell surface membranes as “cellular” antigen has recently received much attention. Hanganutziu-Deicher (HD) antigen is an antigen recognized by a human heterophile antibody, HD antibody. Glycosphingolipids containing N-glycolylneuraminic acid (NeuGc) were found to possess HD antigen activity (1). NeuGc is widely distributed in most animals except human and chickens. Recently, the antigen has been found in malignant tissues and sera from patients with various tumors (2, 3). Here we described isolation and characterization of HD antigen-active gangliosides as a tumor associated antigen in human colon carcinoma and melanoma tissues.
