Abstract

Nanocomposite coatings based on epoxy resin and three types of organic clay (clay 20A;clay 25A and clay 30B) were prepared. The clay concentration was 3% for all nanocomposite coatings. The corrosion protection properties of nanocomposite coatings were evaluated and compared with epoxy coating by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The structures ofcoatings was analysed by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electronicmicroscopy. The results showed that all three organic clays enhanced significantly the corrosionprotection of epoxy coatings. The corrosion protection of nanocomposite. cqlitings depends onthe organic clay used. Among three organic clays studied clay 30B gives the liest nanocomposite coatings for corrosion protection of carbon steel. The analyze by XRD ind'icated the exfoliationof silicate nano layers in epoxy matrices. The surface observation by SEM revealed that the clay30B was better dispersed in epoxy matrices than two other clays
