Abstract

The research attempts to explore the factors affecting the quality of teaching English to non-English major students at National Economics University (NEU). Both quantitative and qualitative data collection tools are employed in the research. The survey for the students which aims to collect quantitative data is conducted based on the qualitative data collected from the interviews with the head of the foreign languages faculty, the head of the department of foreign language for specific purposes and the lecturers teaching English to non-English major students at NEU. The findings reveal that teaching methods have the most important influence on the quality of teaching English to non-English major students at NEU. The next influential factors are teaching contents, students’ attitudes and motivation, lecturers’ attitudes and perception, testing and assessment methods, teaching and learning facilities. Some suggestions and recommendations for administrators, lecturers and students are proposed in the research in order to improve the quality of teaching English to non- English major students at NEU.
