Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this essay is to consider the teaching of Pope Paul VI's Humanae vitae on the need for iustae causae (good reasons) in the spacing of births within marriage. In particular it will ask the question: what constitutes good reasons for not having more children, either for a time, or indefinitely? It will argue that practicing NFP in a way faithful to the norms of conscia paternitas (responsible parenthood) taught in the encyclical is fully consistent with openness to the good of human life and, therefore, not expressive of a contraceptive mentality, even when used to avoid getting pregnant.
