Abstract

This chapter evaluates the concept behind next generation sequencing (NGS). It highlights how NGS is largely responsible for the emergence of new research fields like ecological genomics and population genomics. The chapter then enumerates the history of the first, second, and third generation sequencing before narrating the technological advancements of NGS. It lists various NGS platforms such as 454 pyrosequencing, HiSeqX Ten, and Sequencing by Oligonucleotide Ligation and Detection (SOLiD). The chapter explores deep and targeted sequencing as well. Next, the chapter looks at transcriptomics and epigenomics. It explores the possibility of NGS as a panacea for molecular ecology.
