Abstract

Surface sensitive NEXAFS (Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) spectroscopy technique has been applied to the rubbed polyimide in order to examine the correlation between liquid crystal (LC) pretilt angle and surface structure of polyimides, BPDA-Cn and PMDA-Cn. These results indicate that the surface structure of the polyimides strongly affects the LC pretilt angle. An improved insight on the reported odd-even effect of the LC pretilt angle has also been provided.
