Abstract

Abstract Isaac Newton If modern physics and cosmology can be assigned a birthday, it would be that of Isaac Newton. Born prematurely in Lincolnshire, England, on Christmas Day of 1642,1 according to the calendar then in use in England, the infant Newton barely survived. His father had died before his birth; when his mother remarried a few years afterward, he was given over primarily to the care of his maternal grandmother. He distinguished himself scholastically even as a child, and his family decided that he should enter a university; he began his undergraduate study at Cambridge University in 1661.
