Abstract
1. Early Attempts Newton's earliest notebook, dating from 1664-5, contains some evidence showing that closely upon his discovery of the multiple indices of refraction, he was trying to construct some mechanistic models to explain it. Two features stand I wish to express my deepest gratitude to D. T.
