Abstract

Local media are in transition. The emergence of free media content, changing consumption habits of the audience and, a more competitive market for advertising revenues are challenging the traditional media. At the same time, new kinds of imagined and virtual communities are organized in the internet. Examination of local media offers a perspective on how traditional local media cope with changing media environment. The article is based on two empirical studies on the future prospects of regional and community television and of local newspapers in Finland.
