Abstract

ABSTRACT There has been a considerable amount of research conducted on litigation involving the police in the last two decades. When considering this significant body of literature, there is still a lot about this topic that is unknown. Some of the gaps in the literature are a result of the types of data that have been used to study this topic in the past. This paper explores the use of newspaper articles as an alternative data source to learn more about litigation involving the police. Using newspaper articles from the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and the Chicago-Sun Times from 1993-2003, content analysis revealed that newspaper articles provide details of lawsuits involving the police that other data sources do not. Some of the potential advantages and disadvantages of using newspaper articles to study litigation involving the police are also discussed.
