Abstract

News is discourse about selected contemporary events that is circulated among an audience. As a discourse, news can be characterized as timely, relevant, and true. The meanings of timeliness, relevance, and truth in news vary across cultural boundaries and also over time within societies. News is thus a global phenomenon, but newsmaking is always shaped by local social, political, economic, and cultural systems, so that the style and content of news are always locally inflected.
