Abstract

Annual Conference: The 61st Annual Conference will be held at the University of Bath, 29 June–1 July 2020. See the website for more details: <https://www.sfs.ac.uk/conferences/2020-annual-conference>. R. Gapper Undergraduate Essay Prize: We are delighted to announce that the winner of the Society for French Studies’ 2019 R. Gapper undergraduate essay prize winner is Ellen Kemp (University of Bristol), for an essay entitled ‘Compare and contrast the relationship between voice, space, and forms of intimacy in Chantal Akerman’s Sud (1999) and Corine Shawi’s E-muet (2013)’. The Society offers its congratulations to the winner, and thanks everybody who entered the prize. The 2020 round of the competition will open later in the year and details will be available via this site: <https://www.sfs.ac.uk/prizes/r-gapper-undergraduate-essay-prize>. Malcolm Bowie Prize: Thank you to all those who submitted entries to the Malcolm Bowie Prize. We hope to be able to announce the results shortly. Research Support Funding: The Society recognizes the importance of supporting colleagues across the career stages represented amongst its membership, and also acknowledges that there are certain groups—especially postgraduate students, early-career researchers without permanent positions and active scholars who have retired from permanent posts—for whom available resource is very scarce. We therefore allocate funds to support the conference participation, research visits and other appropriate research-related expenses of postgraduate students and colleagues (including those with emeritus status) without any access to institutional research funding. In the 2017–18 academic year we awarded a total of £6,000 in funding to PGs and ECRs without permanent contracts (and have agreed to raise the fund’s budget in future, if there is demand).
