Abstract
What seems now a long time ago, in 1956, the South Australian School of the Air Service was established, using a transmitter shared with the Royal Flying Doctor Service from Ceduna. (1) This new service seemed a great leap forward in the communication with people of all ages in this State who lived a long way from the nearest town. Whilst a great majority of our population live in the capital cities, Australia is a very large continent (which is emphasised by Figure 1); and, in many cases, our country areas are a long way from those cities.
