Abstract

Abstract The complete nucleotide sequences of the chloroplast genomes of a liverwort ( Marchantia polymorpha ) and a higher plant ( Nicotiana tabacum ) have been determined. A comparison of these demonstrates that chloroplast gene number and organization has been highly conserved in evolution. More importantly, analysis of these sequences has resulted in the identification of a number of open reading frames which are likely to represent additional, previously unrecognized, chloroplast genes.
