Abstract

A large number of viruses are involved in respiratory diseases. This presentation however will consider primarily respiratory ill~esses du~ to newer viruses, i.e., adenoviruses, parainfluenza viruses, and certain enteroviruses. Many of these agents are capable of producing a clinical spectrum ranging from mild upper respiratory disease to severe lower tract involvement. Each of the respiratory disease syndromes can be produced by a number of distinct agents. This situation poses a complex problem. Furthermore, this field of research is quite new and our present k.nowledge is still far from satisfactory, partieularly regarding the Far Eastern countries which I was assigned to cover. Therefore, it is a difficult task to assess the importance of the viral respiratory illnesses in this part of the world.
