Abstract

The Shanghai No. 3 Girls Middle School is the one and only key girls' middle school in Shanghai. Its predecessors were the Zhongxi Girls School [McTyeire High School] and St. Mary's Hall. Founded more than a hundred years ago, it has always been famous in China and abroad for its rigorous scholarship and unique teaching methods. With graduates worldwide, it has been called a "cradle for cultivating female talent." The former honorary president of China, Song Qingling [Soong Ching-ling], and her sisters studied at this school. Among its alumni arc Director Zhu Lilan of the State Ministry of Science and Technology, academician Huang Liang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, academician Chen Yazhu of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, well-known social activists Guo Xiuzhen, Rong Shuren, and Tan Fuyun, Zheng Zhifeng, industrialist Wu Shunwen, and large numbers of professors, researchers, journalists, lawyers, physicians, writers, and artists.
