Abstract

Many babies in the UK begin breastfeeding at birth but do not continue beyond the early weeks. This suggests that families are not adequately supported to follow health guidelines around the duration of breastfeeding, and it is crucial that we find ways to improve this situation. Families vulnerable to early cessation include those experiencing early difficulties which result in significant neonatal weight loss. This article aims to raise questions about the relationship of current practices to clinical evidence, and to begin conversations about how breastfeeding can be more effectively supported through such early challenges.
