Abstract

Two years ago, the journal Nature expressed a deep concern about a surge in retracted scientific papers going out of control (doi:10.1038/478026a). According to the report, there was a tenfold increase in the number of retractions over the previous decade, which has caused much trouble for readers, authors, and publishers. If this phenomenon resulted from scientific fraud or misconduct, we could utilize a plagiarism-detecting system with a thorough reviewing process. Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science has already implemented CrossCheck to prevent the fraudulent papers from being published. However, many previous papers may have carried information that should have been corrected like in any other scientific journals, often including updates, errata, or even retractions. For the sake of convenience, these important changes in printed papers should be easily recognized. In this respect, CrossMark service offered by CrossRef provides a clear overlook on the papers, which gives us useful information to verify that they are the most up-to-date and reliable versions. Starting from the first issue of Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science 2014, we will be able to simply click on the CrossMark logos on document files, and get a status box which lets us check if there are any available updates. Based on this system, we are committed to safely maintain authors' scholarly contents. On the other hand, it has become quite challenging to recognize one particular author's contribution mainly due to numerable duplicates of a single personal name and inconsistent use of abbreviations. This challenge has called attention to the need of authors' unique identification in research objects. Open Researcher Contributor Identification Initiative (ORCID) is an alphanumeric code to effectively identify academic and scientific authors. This is a community-driven effort to create and maintain a registry of unique researcher identifiers through which a transparent connection between researchers and research contents is possible. The ORCID registry is available free of charge to individuals, who may obtain an ORCID identifier, organize their record of activities, and search for other researchers in the registry. ORCID records store only nonsensitive information such as name, email, organization and research activities. In 2014, Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science will integrate the ORCID system into the submission process so that research activities of our authors are promptly distinguished without confusion. We sincerely hope that our valuable readers and authors would greatly benefit from the new system in the Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science 2014. Happy New Year to all of you!
