Abstract

A study o religious groups in contemporary culture suggests two basic ways to xi7rss rdig beliefs or myths ire their contest with scientific beliefs or myths in a pluralistic and conflict-ridden society. Oririskt& appropriate the latest social-scientific findings and methods to reformulate community life and beliefs; the other is to ignore scientific developments and concentrate on a re-presentation of traditional beliefs. Both types of groups are also concerned with the tension between personal growth and social change, the need for close community, the problems of mythic language, and the search for appealing disciplines of personal growth.
