Abstract
The Center for Global Environmental Research (CGER) of the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan, announces a new Web site for online air trajectory calculation (http://cgermetex.nies.go.jp/). The Web server uses the reanalysis meteorological data set of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Prediction.Air trajectories are frequently used by researchers to investigate the airflow pattern and its relation to results of atmospheric monitoring. As an application example, Figure 1 shows the 1998 dust storm event that originated in China and the forward trajectories in the same period initialized at 3000 m in the source region of the dust storm. The airflow indicated by trajectories coincides well with the aerosol index, which shows that dust from China's Gobi desert was transported across the Pacific to the western United States.
