Abstract
In this study, we present the synthesis of water soluble calixarene appended with rhodamine (CR) at lower rim as fluorescent moiety. The synthesized water soluble fluorescent derivative was characterized with spectroscopic techniques and fluorescence response was evaluated towards Hg2+ ion in aqueous environment. Fluorescence studies shows that upon addition of Hg2+, CR induce OFF-ON behaviour which follow CHEF process. Stoichiometric data show 1:1 coordination of metal and ligand with sensitivity of 3.55 × 10−13 molL−1 concentration range. Selectivity of CR towards Hg2+ ion was compared in the presence of other metal ions such as Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cr3+, Ni2+, Co2+, Al3+, Cd2+ and Fe2+. Results show that these metal ions have not pronounced effect on fluorescence intensity on CR-Hg2+ complex.
