Abstract

The paper presents the results of experiments on depositing of the multicomponent Ti–B–N, Ti–Si–N, and Ti–B–Si–N coatings on HSS steel using the ARC PVD technique in a novel two-step approach with the plasma pulse pretreatment. The coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction and tribological tests (nanohardness measurements, scratch tests, wear resistance). The Ti–B–N coatings showed the highest values of hardness, the Ti–B–Si–N coatings the highest adhesion (as evidenced by the value of critical load of 130N), and the Ti–Si–N coatings the best wear resistance. The latter coatings are certainly worth further effort on improving the deposition technology. The plasma-produced inter-layer seems to contribute to hardness of the deposited layer. However, its role in improving the layer adhesion requires further studies.
