Abstract

Optical element arrays act as retroreflectors and have the pseudoconjugate property. A bead array is one type of optical element arrays that is widely used in displays, ranging targets, and traffic signs. In view of the diffraction effect, larger glass beads should be better for far field than the smaller ones usually used. We use a CO 2 laser beam to produce these beads. To increase the retroreflective efficiency and an- swer the concern in cases of the near and far field, we propose and realize the technology of inlaying small beads into large beads. The ex- perimental results show that our new film is superior to existing commer- cial retroreflective films. It displays industrial prospects in related appli- cations. © 2002 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.
