Abstract

Abstract In this work, three meso-substitued zinc porphyrins with different ferrocene donor units (ZnPx, x = 1–3) have been designed, synthesized, and well-characterized. The self-assemblies constructured with the zinc porphyrins and an anchor porphyrin (ZnPA) through the axial coordination linkage (Zn-to-ligand) have been applied as sensitizer in dye sensitized solar cells. Our results revealed that the self assemblies based cells showed significantly improved photocurrent conversion efficiency. Particularly, ferrocene through an amide bridge based zinc porphyrin (ZnP1) solar cell showed higher conversion efficiency compared with its derivatives. These results were also verified by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, absorbed photon current efficiency, light harvesting efficiency and optical performance.
