Abstract

The operation characteristics of laser materials based on Cr3+-doped, low ligand field crystals were investigated. This new class of laser materials allows for tunable pulsed and cw operation at room temperature in the near IR. After the first demonstration of tunable operation in alexandrite (1), room temperature laser action in various Cr3*-doped garnets, e.g. GSGG (2) and GSAG (3), and the perovskite KZnF3 (4) has been reported. In this paper the laser properties as frequency behaviour, output power, slope efficiencies and thermal induced birefringence of GSGG and KZnF3 are investigated using a krypton ion laser as the pump source.
