Abstract

Fluoride glasses have been studied for the past 20 years and have found various applications in optics, sensors, infrared instrumentation, medicine and telecommunications. Material requirements for these applications and for basic research influence the search for new glass-forming systems and the optimization of existing glasses. Fluoroindate and cadmium fluorochloride glasses appear promising for laser fibers and optical amplification. Mixed anion glasses offer some potential in numerous fields, including optical transmission, ionic conductivity, non-linear optical properties and basic research. They encompass new heavy halide, oxyfluoride and chalcohalide glasses.
