Abstract

Despite continuous progress made in the diagnosis and therapeutic modalities, syncope management remains challenging for physicians. The role of electrophysiologic study (EPS) in the evaluation of a patient with syncope has been reviewed by several authors [1–3]. However, recent advances in diagnostic tools, such as the development of an implantable loop recorder [4,5], active clinical investigation of the potential role of pacemaker therapy in reflexogenic bradycardia [6–8], and results from the Antiarrhythmics Versus Implantable Defibrillators (AVID) study and registry [9,10] provide exciting new information on the diagnosis and therapeutic approach to patients with syncope. The overall aim of this review is to update results from the recent clinical trials and to summarize new trends in diagnosis, management, and risk stratification of patients with recurrent syncope.
