Abstract

The diagnosis of cirrhosis and portal hypertension is critical for the correct management and follow-up of patients with chronic liver disease. Non-invasive methods to safely replace liver biopsy and hepatic venous pressure gradient measurement have been increasingly studied in the last 20 years. This review summarizes the available data regarding validated non-invasive methods to diagnose cirrhosis and clinically significant portal hypertension, and provides insight on new technologies (including different elastography techniques, novel imaging methods and combination of tests) that substantially improve the diagnostic armamentarium in this field.
