Abstract

This paper takes a fresh look at coding parameters optimisation, TCP operation and adaptive modulation in the context of Wireless ATM (WATM) link dimensioning subject to meeting specified Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. The authors take into consideration a comprehensive set of teletraffic issues including: (1) effects of retransmissions of erroneous packets using Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) protocols, (2) modulation efficiency (3) Forward Error Correction (FEC) redundancies, and (4) effect of traffic burstiness on loss and delay. Bit Error Rate (BER) parameters, obtained for a range of realistic situations by simulation, are optimized to obtain maximal efficiency over the dimensions of coding and modulation gain. In this paper the authors use the results to show that adaptive modulation, where modulation efficiency is dynamically optimized, provides better efficiency and/or QoS than the same system with FEC for both the ARQ and transparent cases. We present new thinking on perceived performance difficulties of TCP over wireless links.
