Abstract

Newtonian physics is difficult. On the 300th anniversary of the publication of Newton's Principia, it is perhaps hard to admit that one of the most revolutionary sets of scientific ideas is barely comprehended by the majority of the population. Despite an elaborate system of comprehensive education for all pupils, the evidence is that physics educators are not making a great success of providing pupils with a basic understanding of these concepts. Current research points to two areas of difficulty with Newtonian dynamics.
