Abstract

This chapter discusses the new information and communication technologies in the educational system and new technologies for new ways of access to information for students. It also provides an overview of new technologies for communication. The Department of New Technologies in Education is part of the Institut National de Recherche Pedagogique. Its main objective is to study the impact of new information and communication technology on the French educational system by undertaking research with real students in real classrooms. It creates and tests pedagogical products, experimenting on-site, and contributing to the development of concrete proposals to the Ministry of Education. With new technologies in education, knowledge is no longer part of the teacher, but the teacher is the necessary means by which students gain access to information. Schools should prepare children to obtain information on their own, through all kinds of technologies, to select items, to evaluate them, and to manipulate them. More research is required in the field of new technologies in education.
