Abstract

The prevalence of headaches in the general population and scarce knowledge about the prevalence and nature of headaches among college student‐athletes can complicate return‐to‐play decisions. So when student‐athletes experience headaches, it's often unclear whether it's due to a benign headache disorder or headaches unrelated to trauma, or symptoms of a recent concussion or indicative of ongoing recovery from one or more concussions. The quandary, according to a study by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, can result in misdiagnosing or overlooking headaches among student‐athletes.
