SummarySeven new species of Ipomoea are described from Bahia, Brazil: Ipomoea chapadensis J. R. I. Wood & L. V. Vasconc., I. parvibracteolata J. R. I. Wood & L. V. Vasconc., I. connata J. R. I. Wood & L. V. Vasconc., I. pterocaulis J. R. I. Wood & L. V. Vasconc., I. queirozii J. R. I. Wood & L. V. Vasconc., I. longibracteolata Sim.-Bianch. & J. R. I. Wood and I. magna Sim.-Bianch. & J. R. The species are illustrated with line drawings and photographs, their distinguishing characters and relationships are discussed, their distribution is mapped and their conservation status is assessed.

Summary

Introduction

Bahia is the largest state in North East Brazil and has a corresponding diversity of habitats. Botanical exploration of the state began in the 19th century more intensive studies have only taken place during the last fifty years and new species are constantly being discovered. Ongoing studies by one of us (L.V.V.) have identified approximately 46 species of Ipomoea growing in the state of Bahia and two new species have been published recently (Vasconcelos et al 2016). New taxa are being discovered as the result of botanical exploration and as a result of more intensive systematic studies of Ipomoea. Molecular studies have shown that the species described here as I. pterocaulis is not I. jalapa (L.) Pursh as previously identified in herbaria but a distinct species endemic to north east Brazil
