Abstract

Seven species of Calcaronea (Porifera: Calcarea) are described, six new to science (Sycon capricorn, Leucandra sphaeracella, Leucandra nicolae, Ute ampullacea, Syconessa panicula and Grantiopsis heroni spp. nov.) and one a new locality record (Sycettusa tenuis Borojevic and Klautau), collected from cryptic habitats (caves and overhangs) around Heron Island, Capricorn-Bunker Group, southern Great Barrier Reef, Australia. This is the first study documenting biodiversity of Calcaronea in Australian waters in over 50 years, and the first for the world heritage area of the Great Barrier Reef.
