Abstract

During the preparation of a revision of the tropical African genus Baphia (work still in progress) it became necessary to propose four new species based on recent gatherings and incorrectly identified old accessions in several herbaria. The new species are all from lower Guinea (eastern Nigeria to Gabon); this is no surprise because detailed revision of the genus as carried out for eastern tropical Africa (Brummitt 1968, 1971) and the Zambezian region (Brummitt 1965, unpublished) has not been done for this region. The region in question is also noted for its high endemicity (Brenan 1978) and many new taxa in different genera have been described from the area in the recent past.
