Abstract

This paper assesses the development and achievements of two significant European initiatives in developing library and information facilities on the Internet for children and teenagers. CHILIAS (Children's Library ‐ Information ‐ Animation ‐ Skills), developed by a European consortium under the leadership of Stuttgart City Library, Germany, has created a virtual library for children aged between 9 and 12. It enables children to access information in the six languages of the partner countries, communicate with the participating libraries and with other children, and to take part in exercises that will help them to develop their information skills. Its successor, VERITY (Virtual and Electronic Resources for Information Skills Training for Young People), brings together a European consortium under the leadership of Information Services at the University of Sunderland, with the aim of developing a new electronic library service aimed at the needs of teenagers. When completed, in December 2000, VERITY will provide a ‘Virtual Librarian’, a ‘Referral Service’, and an information skills package directed at the target age group.
